Calling a Bottom to Mysterious Murders and Illnesses Aboard Cruise Ships

It has been quite the turn of events for cruise liners over the last decade or so.

Once seen as a higher end status symbol for "holiday-goers," as the British would say, a series of well-publicized outbreaks of illnesses aboard some of the major cruise lines, coupled with some notable husband-wife murders and disappearances, has led to a simple Google Search yielding tons of articles along the lines of, "8 Reasons You Should Never, Ever Go on a Cruse Ship Again."

Nonetheless, Carnival (CCL) rallied after earnings yesterday and is green today. The other majors, like RCL and NCLH (below, on the daily chart), are sporting steadily improving technicals into 2017.

Dare I say it, but the barrage of bad news in the industry may, in fact, be priced in at this point.

In other words, everyone who has a strong aversion to going on a cruse ship for vacation has already made their views quite clear from an economic standpoint (i.e. they fly to the Caribbean instead), and the die-hard cruisers have kept on, well, keepin' on.

At this point, the CCL NCLH RC trio may be setting up for something of a renaissance in terms of streamlining vacation costs into one package. New ports and destinations (Cuba) are certainly a growth prospect, as is the natural cycle of over and undershooting human emotions.
