Saturday Night at Market Chess Cinemas

The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) is a risk-taking crime drama which dares to disappoint the audience in terms of defying conventional Hollywood plot elements and character development.

Without giving too much away, director and co-writer Derek Cianfrance should be applauded for his efforts and ambition in this film, even if he errs on the side of being overly melodramatic at times. Still, to be this ambitious while simultaneously featuring a cast of Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, and Ray Liotta makes the film all the more impressive.

Kudos as well to supporting actors Emory Cohen and Dane DeHaan for pivotal performances in the film's third act.

The film is readily available on Netflix and other streaming services.

via Rotten Tomatoes:

The highly anticipated new drama from director Derek Cianfrance ("Blue Valentine") powerfully explores the consequences of motorcycle rider Luke's (Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling) fateful decision to commit a crime to support his child. The incident renders him targeted by policeman Avery (Golden Globe Award nominee Bradley Cooper), and the two men become locked on a tense collision course which will have a devastating impact on both of their families in the years following.
