Sunday Matinée at Market Chess Cinemas

The Man in the High Castle (2015) is a brand new Amazon Original Series. I just finished up the first season and found it to be an interesting change-of-pace type of show.

The show is an "alternate history" view of North American life after WWII, set in the early-1960s, if the Nazis and Japan had actually won the war. The show takes on certain sci-fi elements as well, of course, as it is based on the Hugo Award-winning novel that established author Philip K. Dick as a force in the science fiction genre.

Thus far, the series has done a good job of exploring the many issues which would likely surface in a North America split between two fascist regimes (including a Neutral Zone in the middle, with the Reich controlling the eastern and midwest, while Japan controls the west). As you might imagine, much of the show focuses on a "resistance" movement of American patriots who seek to return the U.S.A. to its pre-war glory, complete with double-agents on both sides.

This show is not for the faint of heart, in some respects. And it offers a very dark look at what might have been if the Allies had made a few catastrophic mistakes. But it is most certainly food for thought and an entertaining first season for an AMZN original.
