Locked Up Abroad (original title, Banged Up Abroad) has been a running documentary TV Series since 2006 on the  National Geographic Channel.

Also available on Netflix and Amazon, most of the 60-minute episodes follow a similar format, with a mix of interviews from the real-life people portrayed in the series amid a dramatic reenactment. The series weaves in stories about people who have been arrested while travelling abroad, usually for trying to smuggle illegal drugs. A few episodes also feature people who were kidnapped or captured while travelling or living in any other country.

I find this series to be very gripping, particularly with stories and people which I ordinarily would not have too much sympathy for, with drug smuggling involved, etc.. However, the gripping nature of the series speaks to just how well it is produced, directed, and scripted.
