Hurricane Matthew Plays

With good fortune, Hurricane Matthew will turn out to be a dud in the coming days and no-one will suffer a serious injury or death.

But in the event some serious damage does occur, as ominous as Matthew's path and ferocity looks now, it is worth noting some standard "hurricane plays."

GNRC is the go-to play, as they specialize in the backup and portable generators often desired when the power goes out for extended periods of time. The stock surged yesterday and is pausing today. We are watching this back over $38, then $38.80 now.

Natural gas, of course, can also rally during times of hurricanes and extreme stress on the supply chain. Inventory is tomorrow morning, so we will revisit that again soon.

Also, Energizer Holdings, below on the daily chart, is a quaint way to play the hurricane and power outages--Even though we lives in times where flashlights are on our iPhones, the reality is that once the power goes out we are rendered fairly old-school in term of our electronic capabilities.

Battery-powered flashlights and radios suddenly become prized possessions during times of extended power outages. I suspect we could easily see a surge in purchases of ENR, benefiting the stock over $50, especially.

There are other plays, too. But those are some ideas to keep on the radar for now.
