Saturday Night at Market Chess Cinemas
I had originally blown off watching Shutter Island (2010) for a good many years, as I had surmised from the previews that the film would be an exploitative adaptation of Dennis Lehane's fine novel of the same name. In other words, I erroneously inferred from the previews, and then reviews, that the film essentially devolved into lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese experimenting with a pure horror film and doing so in a cheap, Hollywood way.
On some level, I simply then forgot about the film and moved on.
Recently, though I saw the film available to Amazon Prime members and was pleasantly surprised to see an intellectually stimulating neo-noir thriller which avoided the pitfalls of exploitation and, well, trashy horror firms.
Overall, Shutter Island succeeds in challenging the viewer up until its controversial ending. I was pleasantly surprised with how Scorsese visually adapted Lehane's novel and delivered a quality film worth checking out.
