Saturday Night at Market Chess Cinemas

LA-Confidentialmcmr_zps095e250a I consider L.A. Confidential (1997) to be one of the best films from the 1990's. Based on the James Ellroy novel, and set in steamy, noir-ish 1950s Los Angeles, the film focuses on three main scheming, gritty policemen tracking several murders with some shady connections to the police department. The all-star cast features Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kim Basinger, Danny DeVito, David Strathairn, and the great James Cromwell as the memorable Dudley Smith. When Titanic (1997) won Best Picture over L.A. Confidential at the Academy Awards in 1998, I suspected it was the beginning of the end of the Oscar's relevance and credibility.
