Sunday Matinée at Market Chess Cinemas

Inspired by the 1966 British film of the same name and its 1975 sequel, Alfie (2004) is currently available on Amazon Prime and is highly recommended. The film stars the talented and entertaining trio of Jude Law, Marisa Tomei, and Omar Epps.

Although the film did not draw rave reviews from critics (but was far from a critical flop, too), I think it is underrated and worthy of a viewing. To be sure, Jude Law is as talented as they come. I put him just underneath the level of two of the best actors in their respective primes right now: Cillian Murphy and Paul Dano.

But he's up there. And he illustrates in this film how he is capable of comfortably playing the lead and playing it very well.

British-born ladies' man Alfie (Jude Law) exploits his job as a New York City limousine driver to meet and sleep with attractive women -- which infuriates his pseudo-girlfriend Julie (Marisa Tomei), a single mom. His libertine lifestyle is interrupted, however, when his girl-crazy ways end up hurting his best friend, Marlon (Omar Epps). Desperate, Alfie attempts a go at monogamy with the ravishing Nikki (Sienna Miller), but even her good looks aren't enough to keep him out of trouble for long.
