Saturday Night at More-Like-This Cinemas
Instead of a film tonight, we will all have a nice watch and listen to a great music video and for good reason.
Unlike what we are seeing right now on social media (both the actual news and through the bullying mindset by plenty of Twitter Robespierres, to borrow a phrase from Matt Taibbi in his recent must-read piece), the collaboration in the following video of Colt Ford (with Nic Cowan) and Nappy Roots is about bringing people together, not tearing them apart for a power grab or for political gain. David Poag directs the video which was filmed near Ford's hometown in Athens, GA.
For those old enough to remember, in this country we used to often refer to the Voltairean principle of: “I wholly disapprove of what you say—but will defend to the death your right to say it.” Beyond that, there is an abundance of Supreme Court cases regarding freedom of speech where the Court has stood by the First Amendment and struck down any laws which may have had a "chilling effect" on said free speech.
That mindset and spirit has been proven laughably obsolete, sadly, as saying, Retweeting, or even implying something which is deemed offensive (a highly subjective term and thus, the reason why the First Amendment was created--To defend offensive speech, not soft, safe, fluffy speech) is seeing one person after the next shunned in the way of losing their careers, good names, and, in effect, being forced to wear a Scarlet Letter for not dancing on eggshells, across a variety of industries.
If that is the sort of country you all want to live in going forward, well, then keep it up!
If not, then we need more like this, below.
