Geoffrey Rush's performance, for which he won the Best Actor Oscar, on a standalone basis makes Shine (1996) worth seeing.
Rush would rise to a more prominent status in Hollywood after this role, as pianist David Helfgott, who makes a riveting comeback to the piano after enduring a breakdown at a younger age.
This film is based on the real-life pianist of the same name, and is an epic tale of a child prodigy being pushed too hard by childhood teachers and a domineering father.
What makes Shine so memorable is the way that it compels you, the viewer, to put yourself in the midst of the high pressure arena of serious musicians and it makes you feel like you are experiencing everything the characters are, especially Helfgott.
