Saturday Night at Market Chess Cinemas

Netflix recently ordered a second season of Last Chance U (2016), its first sports documentary. And if the second season comes anywhere close to the quality of the first season's six episodes, it will be a huge success. 

Without question, the first season of Last Chance U, released this past July, surpassed the expectations of even the most curious behind-the-scenes sports fan about what happens at the big-time JUCO (Junior college) level, in terms of top tier but tainted talent using the JUCO route to rebuild their damaged reputations and pick up another Division 1 scholarship to play football.

But even for non-football fans, the human interest angle with several of the prominent characters featured (the wildly-talented, bad boy but good-natured star players, the surly but likable coach, the caring academic advisor who becomes the de facto mother to several players, the die-hard local fans in rural Mississippi, etc.) in the series makes this worth watching. 

On the whole, the first season starts off brilliantly and ends the same way. In what is quickly becoming a saturated market for streaming original series and sports documentaries, Last Chance U is worthy of a full scholarship to a top programs on its own merits.
